Is this the smallest brake that you offer?

The CD Series of dual-disc brakes are generally used for light tension applications as they have low inertia, and the patented CD Friction modules provide excellent resolution even at very low air pressures, meaning you get extremely precise tension control throughout a wide torque range. By optimizing the friction pad coefficients, web tension can be regulated virtually down to zero lb-in of torque.

We even offer a CS Series of brakes that utilizes only one brake rotor, for even lighter tension applications and absolute control down to the lightest tension requirements.

Will these brakes get hot?

Any brake will get hot if not properly sized. Consult a Montalvo Applications Specialist to ensure proper brake sizing for your application and prevent the brakes from overheating.

What size brake do I need?

All brake applications need to be reviewed by experienced Applications Engineers to make sure the proper brake is selected for your application. Montalvo offers the widest range of torque and heat dissipation of any brake line in the industry. Consult a Montalvo Applications Specialist to assist with proper sizing.

Can I buy replacement pads from you?

Absolutely. Montalvo offers many different styles and friction coefficient to suit any application.

Why is my brake making noise?

Noise is typically caused by vibration of the brake pad at the pad/rotor interface. There are many causes of this vibration and as many solutions to eliminating it. Please see our technical paper Brake Noise Solutions for a more detailed treatise into the causes and solutions for brake noise.

Why do my pads wear unevenly?

Uneven pad wear can be a symptom of excessive heat at the brake pad. The brakes should be sized such that each brake pad does not have to dissipate more than 2 HP of heat. (4 HP per cylinder on dual disc brakes). Consult your Montalvo Applications Engineer for assistance with proper brake sizing.

Why do my pads wear so quickly?

Excessive pad wear is typically a symptom of excessive heat. The brakes should be sized such that each brake pad does not have to dissipate more than 2 HP of heat. (4 HP per cylinder on dual disc brakes). Consult your Montalvo Applications Engineer for assistance with proper brake sizing.

Typical pad life should be a minimum of 4-6 months under normal to high utilization. It is not uncommon for pads to last up to a year or more in properly sized applications.

Where can I get the MSDS for my Brake Pads?

MSDS sheets for all of Montalvo’s friction pads can be found on the Friction Pads Webpage. Please select the pad you are using from this page and find the MSDS within the table.

How do I know what brake I have?

Montalvo brakes can be identified in several ways. Montalvo offers both dual disc brakes and single disc brakes. Either style utilize both of our Standard Series and HP Series rotors. The brake rotor diameter is the first way to identify your brake. The fin profile will determine if you have our Standard Series (approximately 1” overall plate thickness) or our HP Series (approximately 2”-3”, depending on diameter). The friction module style is the next method for identifying the series of brake. If it is a dual disc brake, Standard Series and HP Series brakes utilize our Standard Friction Module, which is an aluminum casting that typically houses four (4) brake pads. The Standard Friction Module uses our Standard Friction Pads that are round and 3.25” in diameter.

What are my options if my brake is squealing?

Noise is typically caused by vibration of the brake pad at the pad/rotor interface. There are many causes of this vibration and as many solutions to eliminating it. Please see our technical paper Brake Noise Solutions for a more detailed treatise into the causes and solutions for brake noise.
