From 1.4 to 16,726 in-lb the V-Brake is available in five different models to meet the needs of practically any application.
No tools required to change every pad on your V-Brake. Just snap-out your old pads and snap-in the new ones.
Montalvo’s signature high thermal capacity discs combined with a patented fin design provides maximum heat dissipation to keep your V-Brake operating at the highest quality.

Vanguard Creel Brake (VCB)VCB-Series Individual Tow Tension Creel Brakes
A component of the Vanguard™ System, the VCB provides tension/torque control of individual creel positions as well as other compact, low tension narrow web and custom applications.

Factors We Examine When Designing a Brake System

Designing an optimized brake system involves a meticulous process. At Montalvo Corporation, we consider a variety of factors to ensure that our solutions meet your specific needs:

Design Factors

  • Max roll OD
  • Core size(s)
  • Line Speed min/max
  • Web width(s)
  • Material PLI(s) – Don’t forget, material can also be sent in for us to ascertain the optimal running tension.
  • Emergency stop required?
  • Max roll weight

The Physics matters

While answering the critical design factors is crucial, the math behind those answers is paramount to equipping you with the correct brakes for your requirements.

Main Components behind the physics of Montalvo Pneumatic Brakes

  • Disk: Carries the torque to the product
  • Pad: Creates the frictional force on the disk
  • Module: Creates a load on the Pad
  • Air supply: Able to control the Modules

Where does the Tension come from?

Making Tension: Tension is a Pulling Force, its created by putting torque on a roll of a diameter
T=τ/r(roll)

Making Torque: Torque is created from a drag (friction) force between pads and disk
τ =Ff·r(brake)

Making Friction: Friction is created by applying a normal force to objects sliding
Ff =μ·FN

Making Normal Force: Force is created by applying air pressure to piston
FN=psi·area

Controlling Tension:
A desired tension can be simplified to a system Constant times the air pressure
T= C·psi but the Constant is calculated on those specifications and based your individual needs. That’s why Montalvo gives every customer the individual attention that you have come to expect from our service.

Tension means Heat: Where does it go?

The law of conservation of energy says that Energy is neither created or destroyed, also known as: you gotta put it someplace… All of the energy used to create tension is transformed into frictional heat, fortunately for us that’s predicted by Physics formulas too!
P(heat)=T·v

All that heat power is now in the Disk (pads don’t conduct as well as disks), so we have to get it out of there. Q/t = kA((T1-T2)/l)

Long story short, Q is the heat transfer out of the disk and A is the surface area of the disk where our patented cooling disks dissipate heat at just the right amount. Did you know that the cause of a squealing brake might actually be that it is running too cold?
